Frequently Asked Questions
Find clear answers about insurance, guarantees, drivers, trips to Argentina, permitted roads, assistance and the main conditions of your rental.
1 What should I do in case of an accident or disaster?
In case of accident, damage, theft or any other incident, communicate immediately with TP Rentacar and follow the instructions that we will deliver to you. The notice must be made as soon as possible and, in any case, within the maximum period established in the contract.
- For vehicles with a capacity exceeding 7 pasajeros, el deducible correspondiente aumenta en 10 UF + IVA.
For vehicles with a capacity exceeding 7 pasajeros, este deducible aumenta en 10 UF + IVA.
Frequently Asked Questions
Find clear answers about insurance, security deposits, drivers, travel to Argentina, permitted roads, roadside assistance, and the main conditions of your rental.
1What should I do in the event of an accident or other incident?
In the event of an accident, damage, theft, or any other incident, contact TP Rentacar immediately and follow the instructions we provide. Notice must be given as soon as possible and, in all cases, within the maximum period established in the rental agreement.
If there are injured persons, you must also immediately notify Carabineros de Chile or the competent police authority.
Whenever it is possible and safe to do so, take photographs of the scene, the vehicle, and any third parties involved, and collect their contact details, license plate number, and any other relevant information.
Do not carry out repairs, accept liability, or reach agreements with third parties without prior authorization from TP Rentacar, except for urgent actions required to protect people or prevent further damage.
TP Rentacar may request an incident statement, photographs, documents, and any other information required to properly manage the event and process it with the insurance company.
2What is the insurance deductible?
The deductible is the amount the renter must pay when damage or an incident occurs that is covered by the insurance.
TP Rentacar applies the following deductibles:
- 30 UF + VAT: for partial damage covered by the insurance, meaning damage that does not involve rollover, going off a slope/embankment, or total loss.
- 60 UF + VAT: in the event of rollover, going off a slope/embankment, or total loss of the vehicle.
- For vehicles with a capacity of more than 7 passengers, the applicable deductible increases by 10 UF + VAT.
It is important to understand that the deductible applies to events covered by the insurance. If the damage occurs under circumstances excluded from coverage, the deductible does not necessarily limit the renter's liability.
The deductible should not be confused with the rental security deposit: they are different concepts. The security deposit backs the obligations arising from the rental, while the deductible is the renter's financial participation in a covered claim.
3What happens if I have an accident and another vehicle is at fault?
Even if the accident was caused by another vehicle or a third party, the renter remains responsible to TP Rentacar for damage to the rented vehicle.
In the case of partial damage covered by the insurance, the renter must pay the applicable damage costs up to the 30 UF + VAT deductible limit.
The existence of a third party at fault does not exempt the renter from making the corresponding payment to TP Rentacar and does not require TP Rentacar to wait for the outcome of claims, recovery procedures, or third-party insurance before charging the renter.
Whenever possible, the renter must collect the driver's and vehicle's details, license plate number, contact information, photographs, and any other relevant information about the accident, and contact TP Rentacar immediately.
Afterwards, the renter may independently seek any possible reimbursement or coverage through credit-card benefits, personal insurance, insurers, or other coverage arrangements they may have.
4Are tires and windows covered by the insurance?
The standard insurance coverage does not include damage to tires or glass, including the windshield.
TP Rentacar offers optional additional coverage for certain types of damage to these items, subject to the conditions provided when the service is purchased.
For tires, additional coverage means that if a tire is damaged in a covered situation, the customer will not have to pay the cost of the damaged tire.
If the customer gets a flat tire or suffers tire damage in Torres del Paine, on a remote road, or anywhere else, purchasing this coverage does not mean that TP Rentacar must travel to the location free of charge to repair or change the tire or deliver a replacement tire.
When assistance, delivery of a tire, recovery, or another service is required because of damage occurring during use of the vehicle, assistance or transportation costs may be charged to the renter, even when the damaged tire itself is covered.
If the problem is caused by a vehicle fault or a matter attributable to TP Rentacar, the corresponding assistance will be arranged at no cost to the customer.
Damage and expenses related to tires occurring in Argentina are the renter's responsibility.
For any problem that may affect safety or the continuation of the trip, the renter must contact TP Rentacar before carrying out any repair or replacement in order to receive the appropriate instructions.
5What happens in the event of rollover, going off a slope/embankment, or total loss?
In the event of rollover, going off a slope/embankment, or total loss of the vehicle, a deductible of 60 UF + VAT applies, provided that the incident is covered by the insurance.
For vehicles with a capacity of more than 7 passengers, this deductible increases by 10 UF + VAT.
Rollover and going off a slope/embankment are expressly included in this category for deductible purposes, regardless of the apparent extent of the damage at the time of the accident.
Any recovery, towing, transport, or vehicle retrieval expenses required as a result of the incident are payable by the renter and are separate from the applicable deductible.
The deductible applies to events covered by the insurance. If the incident occurs under circumstances excluded from coverage, the deductible does not necessarily limit the renter's liability.
In any of these situations, the renter must contact TP Rentacar immediately, follow the instructions provided, and supply all information required to manage the claim.
6Can I drive on gravel roads?
Yes. TP Rentacar vehicles may be driven on gravel roads, provided they are authorized roads or routes suitable for vehicular traffic.
Gravel roads are common in Patagonia, so driving on them does not by itself constitute improper use of the vehicle. However, the driver must adjust speed and driving to road, weather, and visibility conditions.
Off-road driving is not permitted, nor is driving on tracks, beaches, dunes, unconsolidated terrain, or areas that are not authorized roads for vehicular traffic, unless TP Rentacar has given prior express authorization.
Driving on an allowed gravel road does not mean that any damage occurring while driving is automatically covered by the insurance. Coverage depends on the type of damage, the coverage purchased, and compliance with the rental conditions.
If you are unsure about a road or route you intend to use, we recommend checking with TP Rentacar in advance.
7Can I travel to Argentina with the vehicle?
Yes, certain TP Rentacar vehicles may travel to Argentina, but prior express authorization from TP Rentacar is required.
Before the trip, the permits and documents required for the international border crossing must be arranged. This service may be subject to additional conditions and charges, which will be informed to the customer in advance.
The documents and permits for international travel establish a maximum permitted stay, linked to the authorized rental period and the validity of the corresponding documentation.
If the customer needs to remain longer in Argentina, they must contact TP Rentacar before the permit expires. Simply extending the trip unilaterally or continuing to use the vehicle is not sufficient.
Failure to comply with the authorized period may lead to serious customs consequences, including retention, seizure, attachment, or restriction of the vehicle, as well as fines, taxes, and other procedures imposed by the competent authority.
If the vehicle is retained, seized, attached, restricted, or subjected to customs proceedings because of the renter's non-compliance, all resulting costs, taxes, fines, expenses, and losses will be payable by the renter.
Recovering a vehicle subject to such measures may involve substantial customs and financial costs, which may even make recovery economically unfeasible.
If, as a result of the renter's non-compliance, the vehicle cannot be recovered or recovery becomes economically unfeasible, the renter may be liable up to the full value of the vehicle and for any additional losses caused, and insurance deductibles will not constitute a limit on that liability.
Outside Chile, assistance or resolution of a contingency may be limited by territorial, legal, customs, and logistical conditions.
In the event of any accident, breakdown, or issue relating to the documentation or the vehicle's stay in Argentina, the renter must contact TP Rentacar immediately before carrying out repairs or making decisions concerning the vehicle.
8Can someone who is not included in the rental agreement drive the vehicle?
No. The vehicle may only be driven by persons who are properly identified and authorized in the rental agreement.
Each driver must meet TP Rentacar's requirements and present a valid identity document or passport and a valid driver's license.
In that case, the 30 UF or 60 UF + VAT deductible limits do not apply. The renter will be responsible for the full cost of the damage to the vehicle and any other applicable costs, damage, or losses, in accordance with the rental agreement.
If another driver needs to be added during the rental, the renter must contact TP Rentacar and obtain authorization before that person drives the vehicle.
9What happens if I return the vehicle after the agreed date or time?
If you need to keep the vehicle longer, you must request a rental extension before the rental period expires.
An extension is not automatic and must be authorized in advance by TP Rentacar, as it depends on vehicle availability and may involve additional charges.
If the vehicle is returned after the agreed date or time without a previously authorized extension, the applicable late-return charges will be applied in accordance with the rental agreement.
Continuing to use the vehicle after the authorized period does not constitute an extension of the rental agreement.
When the vehicle is in Argentina, the special conditions relating to permits and authorized periods of stay described in Question 7 also apply.
10What happens if I return the vehicle before the agreed date?
The renter may return the vehicle before the date established in the rental agreement, but a voluntary early return does not entitle the renter to a refund for unused rental days.
Once the rental has begun, the contracted period is considered committed and the vehicle has been reserved for the customer for those dates. Therefore, no refund, discount, or proportional reimbursement applies to days the customer chooses not to use.
If the early return is caused by a fault or problem attributable to the vehicle or to TP Rentacar, TP Rentacar will evaluate the situation directly to determine the appropriate solution.
An early return must be coordinated in advance with TP Rentacar, including the location and time for receiving the vehicle.
11What happens if the vehicle has a mechanical problem during the rental?
If the vehicle has a mechanical fault or problem that may affect safety or the continuation of the trip, the renter must contact TP Rentacar before carrying out any repair, replacing parts, or otherwise intervening in the vehicle.
TP Rentacar will assess the situation and provide the instructions required to determine the most appropriate way to resolve the problem.
When the fault is attributable to the vehicle and was not caused by misuse, an accident, negligence, or an action by the renter, TP Rentacar will arrange the corresponding assistance or solution at no cost to the customer.
Depending on the location, nature of the fault, and availability, the solution may consist of assistance, repair, or replacement of the vehicle, as appropriate and where possible.
If the fault, problem, or damage was caused by misuse, improper driving, negligence, breach of the rental conditions, or any action attributable to the renter or an authorized driver, the costs of assistance, diagnosis, repairs, parts, recovery, towing, transport, and any other resulting expenses will be payable by the renter.
When the vehicle is outside Chile, the availability and timing of assistance or replacement will be subject to existing territorial, legal, customs, and logistical limitations.
12What do I need to present and pay when picking up the vehicle?
To pick up the vehicle, the renter must present an identity document or passport, a valid driver's license, and a credit card with sufficient available credit to provide the CLP $800,000 security deposit.
All other authorized drivers must also present an identity document or passport and a valid driver's license, and they must be properly included in the rental agreement.
Full payment of the rental is made at the start of the service, before the vehicle is delivered. The security deposit must also be provided at that time.
In exceptional cases, TP Rentacar may authorize in advance a different method for providing the security deposit, subject to the special conditions established for those cases.
13Can I rent a vehicle for fewer than 4 days?
Our booking system is designed for standard rentals of 4 days or more.
Every vehicle requires preparation, inspection, cleaning, delivery, and return procedures, regardless of the length of the rental. For this reason, rentals of fewer than 4 days are not available for direct booking through our system.
If you need a vehicle for fewer than 4 days, you may contact us directly to ask whether we can exceptionally offer the service.
These rentals are subject to availability and TP Rentacar's operational conditions, so they are not guaranteed.
When TP Rentacar exceptionally accepts a rental of fewer than 4 days, special delivery, return, and payment conditions may apply. These will be explained and agreed with the customer before the service is confirmed.
These rentals usually require the customer to pick up the vehicle personally at our office within a previously agreed and limited time window and return it at the specifically agreed place and time. Because of the way our operation is organized, strict compliance with those times is important.
For these exceptional rentals, payment is made in cash, according to the conditions communicated when the request is accepted.
If the proposed conditions do not meet the customer's needs, the customer may simply choose not to confirm the rental, with no obligation.
14Am I guaranteed the exact vehicle shown in my reservation?
The reservation guarantees the vehicle category booked, but not necessarily a specific make, model, year, color, or individual vehicle.
The photographs, makes, and models shown on our website are representative of the category and characteristics of the vehicle offered. The vehicle ultimately provided will have similar characteristics within the reserved category.
If, due to availability, maintenance, a breakdown, or another operational circumstance, a vehicle in the reserved category cannot be provided, TP Rentacar will inform the customer and may offer an available alternative.
Our aim is for the vehicle delivered to retain the main characteristics and capacity required for the booked trip, without a category reservation guaranteeing one specific unit.
15What happens if I lose or damage the vehicle keys?
Loss, misplacement, or damage to the keys during the rental period is the renter's responsibility.
The customer must contact TP Rentacar immediately and must not attempt to force the vehicle's doors, ignition, or security system.
The renter must pay the cost of replacing, programming, or repairing the key, as applicable.
Especially when the vehicle is far from Punta Arenas or in a difficult-to-access area, losing a key may result in additional costs for transporting a replacement key, assistance, towing, recovery, transport, or retrieval of the vehicle.
These expenses will also be payable by the renter when the situation was caused by the loss or damage of the key under the renter's responsibility.
Replacement of the key does not mean that TP Rentacar must provide free assistance at the vehicle's location. How and when the situation can be resolved will depend on the vehicle's location, availability of a replacement key, and existing logistical conditions.
If the key has a fault that is not attributable to the customer, TP Rentacar will arrange the corresponding solution at no cost to the renter.
16What should I do if I get a flat tire or damage a tire during the trip?
A simple flat tire does not require assistance from TP Rentacar. The vehicle has the equipment needed to change to the spare tire, and the renter must carry out the change whenever conditions allow it to be done safely.
If the customer cannot locate the spare tire, jack, wheel wrench, or other necessary equipment, they may contact TP Rentacar for guidance on where these items are located or how to use them.
If the flat tire can be repaired, it should be properly repaired so that the tire can later be returned to the vehicle.
If the customer purchased additional tire coverage and the damage is covered, the customer will not have to pay the cost of the damaged tire. However, this coverage does not include free roadside assistance, transporting a tire, towing, recovery, or travel by TP Rentacar personnel to the vehicle's location.
If the customer requests any of these services because of a flat tire or damage occurring during use of the vehicle, the costs of assistance or transportation will be payable by the renter.
If the problem is a fault attributable to the vehicle or the responsibility of TP Rentacar, the necessary assistance will be arranged at no cost to the customer.
The costs of repair, replacement, and any related assistance are the renter's responsibility.
